During the autumn 2014 we are going to explore ways how to develop concepts and prototypes which can be implemented in a locally established community in Macedonia.
Together with all who would be interested to contribute to this process, we will research, present and discuss different aspects of community establishment, with the aim to gather the collective wisdom and share the best practices in the world and in the country. The ultimate quest, underlying all themes and guiding us during all events and activities, will be – is it possible to create a sustainable community in Macedonia, a living, learning and working space open to all sustainable-minded people. The broad vision is to create a vibrant living space in nature, incubator labs for eco-social enterprises and a home of common-good cooperatives with working spaces, creativity and cultural spaces, permaculture gardens, vegetarian restaurants, guest houses, health and educational centres. By the end of the year we should have created a comprehensive concept paper which will guide us in the establishment of such a collective space and which will help us in designing the basic elements for its sustenance.
The themes are as follows:
- FOOD (PRODUCTION, DISTRIBUTION AND CONSUMPTION) 13 – 19 October
- EDUCATION AND TRAINING 20 – 26 October
- BUILDING AND HOUSING 27 October – 2 November
- WASTE MANAGEMENT 3 – 9 November
- COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT 10 – 16 November
- ENERGY EFFICIENCY 17 – 23 November
- WORK AND SOCIAL ENTERPRISES 24 – 30 November
- ARTS AND CRAFTS 1 – 7 December
Some of the questions we will try to answer are:
What is involved in the food chain? What is the best way to produce food in such a community? How can we make that process sustainable and involve the locals? What is the best way to organize food distribution from and for the community? What are the possibilities to prepare and serve organic food?
· EDUCATION AND TRAINING
What are the possibilities for an alternative education system in the community? What other models can be implemented in such an environment? Life-long learning, skills building programmes, outdoor education, woofing, EVS, residentials, early education, etc. Who would be the beneficiaries?
· BUILDING AND HOUSING
What are the possibilities for creating suitable infrastructure and designing the community? What models are there for building with natural materials? What are the legal requirements for building? How can be housing in the community be organized?
· WASTE MANAGEMENT
What models of waste management can be implemented in an environment such as the community? What practices can be followed? 4Rs, zero waste, composting, ecological footprints, etc.
· COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
What is the most optimal organization model for the community in Macedonian circumstances? How can it be founded legally and how can it be managed? Are there any existing models of community building and collective decision making which can be implemented? Sociocracy, non-violent communication, cooperative management etc.
· ENERGY EFFICIENCY
What practices in energy efficiency can be implemented? What are the most optimal (and possible) ways of preserving energy (solar, wind, water) in the community, and how it can be used communally?
· WORK AND ECO-SOCIAL ENTERPRISES
What would be the economical profile of the community? What are the possibilities for creating green jobs and engaging vulnerable groups of the society? What will be the work-life balance? Is there a possibility for a locally managed community currency? What is eco-social entrepreneurship?
· ARTS AND CRAFTS
What models of creative economies can be developed in the community? How can we develop programmes for revival of old trades in Macedonia? How can we best use those skills for the benefit of the community?
In order to answer those, and many other important questions, each week we will have at least one event, and one community-led open discussion about the topics related to the weekly theme (combined with a home-made food sharing, for which you are also invited to join). For each of the themes, there is a team of unaVision volunteers preparing the presentations, events, activities, discussions and the research about the possibilities and the best practices in the world and the country. Everyone with an idea, knowledge, skills, information about certain topic is welcome to join the weekly activities and to contribute towards the mosaic of creating a common vision.
The aim at the end of each week is to have collated information, practices and prototypes of possible ways to organize that particular aspect of the community. The insights need to be relevant, practical and doable, so they can be used as a starting matrix tool for the formation of the actual sustainable community during 2015.
